The war in Afghanistan is
9 years old today. I'm sure there will be all sorts of depressing coverage for me to read throughout the day, which will probably be the most I'll have heard about the war all year - I never see it on the news, probably couldn't tell you precisely why we're there, and haven't a clue what we're supposed to be doing there, which I would be embarrassed about, except that I'm pretty sure most of the country is in the same boat.
Mother Jones (linked above) has a brief summary of the current situation, for those of you who also need some catching-up. Here's my favorite quote:
"If you have to use a photo from 2006 to fit your narrative about Afghanistan's status in 2010, its time to go home."
